Richard is a Senior Lecturer within the Department of Management, Otago School of Business. He is a Chartered Production Engineer, member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and a senior member of the American Society for Quality (ASQ).
His teaching and research interests lie in the areas of operational and business process improvement, and the development of organisational performance measurement practices and systems. Richard regularly works with manufacturing and service organisations in private, public, SME and not-for-profit sectors. One of his current research areas is focused on how environmental performance measures are integrated with the normal suite business performance metrics in an organisation. Other areas of research interest include the application of Lean manufacturing principles to Healthcare environments, the role of Knowledge Management in the operational improvement process, and performance measurement in not-for-profit and public sector organisations.
In August 2009 Richard was appointed Academic Leader for Executive Programmes. In this part-time position Richard is a member of the Executive Programmes management team with specific responsibility for developing the academic curriculum of the MBA and Executive Education programmes.
Richard immigrated to New Zealand in 2005 prior to which he was Lecturer in Quality Management, Manchester School of Management, UMIST, (University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology) which became Manchester Business School in Oct 2004. Before UMIST Richard taught manufacturing engineering in the Mechanical Engineering Department of Manchester Metropolitan University.
Before moving to academia Richard held several managerial and technical positions within British Aerospace, latterly as production manager for Airbus wing structure components. Richard served a four year craft apprenticeship and worked on the shop floor as an aircraft fitter for two years.
Richard is also the Academic Leader on the Management Team.
